Newly constructed US 41 southbound lanes also ready for traffic

(Green Bay) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region is announcing the Breezewood Lane interchange at US 41 in Winnebago County, along with an eight-mile section of southbound US 41 between Breezewood Lane and US 45, is opening to motorists the evening of Tuesday, October 11.  Breezewood Lane between Bergstrom/Gillingham roads and Harrison Street is expected to open by 7 p.m. The ramps to US 41 from Breezewood Lane and two lanes of the newly constructed southbound US 41 roadway will open by 10 p.m.

The opening marks the completion of the second phase of the $56 million project.  Phase three involves the reconstruction of all northbound lanes in this section of US 41. Construction begins in spring 2012.

“When the Breezewood Lane interchange closed earlier this year, some 24,000 motorists who use it daily, had to find another way to get in and out of Neenah,” said Will Dorsey, WisDOT’s northeast region director. “I’m pleased to announce this essential entry point into Neenah opens next week. I also want to thank the city of Neenah, business owners and all residents for their patience and support during construction.”

The interchange closed to traffic for demolition in March. The project replaced the 34-year-old Breezewood Lane bridge crossing US 41 and constructed multilane roundabouts at the ramp terminals and intersections of Breezewood Lane and Bergtrom/Gillingham roads, as well as Bell and Harrison streets.  Work also involved the widening of southbound US 41 to three lanes between Breezewood Lane and US 45.

During construction on US 41, dual lanes of northbound and southbound traffic were maintained on existing northbound lanes.  By 10 p.m., southbound US 41 traffic will be switched over to two lanes on the newly constructed roadway and remain in this pattern through spring 2012. Northbound traffic will operate on existing lanes until switched over to the new southbound US 41 in 2012, where two lanes of traffic will operate in both directions, until construction of northbound lanes is complete in November 2012.
